How to Migrate Hardware LoadMasters to a New Data Center
If you have Hardware LoadMasters, you may find that you will need to re-purpose your LoadMaster at another data center site. Configuration may, or may not, be maintained at the new data center site. The below steps should be followed to ensure as little downtime as possible.
For High Availability (HA) environments:
- Take a backup of your configuration. Backups can be generated by navigating to System Configuration > System Administration > Backup/Restore > Create Backup File.
- Take a backup of your certificates. Backups can be generated by navigating to Certificates & Security > Backup/Restore certs > Certificate Backup.
- Shut down the standby LoadMaster. Since both LoadMasters will retain all configuration, it is recommended that the standby LoadMaster be done first to minimize downtime. In the event that the configuration is lost from the master, you can quickly restore the backup by using the same backup file you generated and navigate to System Configuration > System Administration > Backup/Restore > select the backup file by clicking Choose File > select the check box labelled LoadMaster Base, VS, GEO & ESP SSO Configuration and click Restore Configuration.
- Move the former standby LoadMaster to your new location. Console access is required to move the individual IP, shared IP, and Default Gateway simultaneously. If this is not done, you will not be able to connect to your LoadMaster. You must to change the Virtual IP addresses (VIPs) if the LoadMasters are moving to a new network.
Note: If the network remains the same, and the correct routing is in place, you will cause a duplicate IP for every one of your VIPs. Ensure that you take precautions against this behavior. - Ensure WUI connectivity to that LoadMaster.
- Once that LoadMaster has migrated and your DNS is set up properly in the new location, you can disconnect your master LoadMaster in the original location. You will also need to console into this LoadMaster to change the individual and shared IP and Default Gateway.
- We would recommend that you take a new backup of your configuration to ensure that you have a current backup, as the original backup is now obsolete.
For non-HA environments:
- Take a backup of your configuration. Backups can be generated by navigating to System Configuration > System Administration > Backup/Restore > Create Backup File.
- Take a backup of your certificates. Backups can be generated by navigating to Certificates & Security > Backup/Restore certs > Certificate Backup.
- Take this time to ensure proper DNS and firewall setup at your new site, if applicable.
- Move the LoadMaster to your new location.
Note: Console access is required to move the management IP address and Default Gateway simultaneously, if moving subnets. If this is not done, then you will not be able to connect to your LoadMaster. - Ensure WUI connectivity to your LoadMaster. Note that you will need to change the VIPs, if the LoadMasters are moving to a new network.
Note: There will be downtime while you move this LoadMaster. - KEMP recommends taking a new backup of your configuration to ensure that you have a current backup, as the original backup is now obsolete.
