licensing the LoadMaster

Obtaining a license for the LoadMaster, whether it is a Virtual LoadMaster or a physical appliance, is required prior to being able to manage and configure your unit. As of the 7.0 firmware, an online licensing feature has been implemented allows users to request licenses and receive a response from our remote licensing server. Using this model, the LoadMaster will transmit its request via HTTPS. There is also an offline licensing mode that can be used if the LoadMaster does not have access to the internet.

If the LoadMaster has obtained an IP address via a DHCP server, Section 1 can be skipped and you can refer to Section 2 which provides instructions on how to license the LoadMaster via the Web User Interface (WUI).

Section 1: Initially Configure the LoadMaster via the Console

If the LoadMaster did not obtain an IP address via DHCP, the settings will need to be initially configured via the console menu. The LoadMaster's console menu can be accessed in several ways:

  • Virtual LoadMaster - access the console menu via a hypervisor
  • Physical LoadMaster - access the console menu via a directly connected USB keyboard and VGA monitor. Alternatively, you can connect via a Serial Connection using the following settings;
    • Speed: 115200
    • Data Bits: 8
    • Parity: None
    • Stop Bits: 1
    • Flow Control: None

Log in to the console. The default LoadMaster login details are as follows:

  • Username: bal
  • Password: 1fourall

After logging in to the console, the LoadMaster will prompt for a few key settings; an interface IP address for the unit, a DNS server and a default gateway.

Enter the IP address.

Enter the Default Gateway address.

Enter the Name Server address.

After successfully configuring these settings, you will be prompted to navigate to the WUI, via https://<IPAddress>.

Section 2: License the LoadMaster via the WUI

Go to the LoadMaster WUI by entering https://<LoadMasterIPAddress> in the address bar of a browser.

Once the LoadMaster has responded, and end user license agreement will appear. Accept the license agreement to continue.

Decide whether to allow or disallow the automatic firmware update checking.

The licensing screen will then appear.

If the LoadMaster firmware version is 7.0-10 or above the license can be updated using either the online or offline licensing methods (sections below).

Online Licensing:

If the LoadMaster has access to the Internet, online licensing can be used:

  1. Access the LoadMaster WUI.
  2. Select Online Licensing and enter your KEMP ID and Password. If you do not have a KEMP ID you can register here: KEMP ID Registration.
  3. If you have an order id, please enter it.
  4. Click License Now.

Offline Licensing:

If the LoadMaster does not have Internet access, offline licensing can be used:

  1. Select Offline Licensing and click the Get License link.
  2. Enter your KEMP ID and Password, leave the Order ID blank unless you are applying a permanent license. If you do not have a KEMP ID you can register here: KEMP ID Registration.
  3. Upon completion the license will be emailed to you.
  4. Copy and Paste the License BLOB (the text from the start of the word begin to the end of the word end) into the License box.
  5. Click License Now.

If the computer you are using to connect to the LoadMaster WUI is not internet accessible, please follow these instructions:

  1. Select Offline Licensing and write down the Access Code.
  2. Take the access code to a computer with internet access and go to https://alsi.kemptechnologies.com/register/offLineLicensing.php
  3. Enter your KEMP ID and Password. If you do not have a KEMP ID you can register here: KEMP ID Registration.
  4. Leave the Order ID blank unless you are applying a permanent license.
  5. Upon completion the license will be emailed to you.
  6. Write down the Legacy License and input the license into the LoadMaster WUI on the other computer that has access.

A license will be applied to the unit. If you have purchased a physical unit, you should receive a permanent license. If you have purchased a Virtual LoadMaster, ensure to enter the Order ID to obtain a permanent license. If you would like to trial the product, or do not yet have an Order ID, providing just your KEMP ID and password will apply a temporary license, which will be valid for 30 days.

Note: KEMP IDs are registered email addresses. If you have not registered an email with KEMP Technologies, go to: Create a KEMP ID.

For further information, please refer to the Licensing Feature Description.

The KEMP Technologies Support staff can assist if you experience any licensing issues. Please contact them by visiting our KEMP Support Site.

my LB is asking for a license and has no internet access. I can not find the page where I can enter the access code without registering a new user.

You need to select the offline licensing mode and then enter in the details.

how is this done for a virtual load balancer? The virtual does not provide a serial number until it is registered.

Once the request is sent to our licensing system we will create the serial number. This works for both online and offline mode.

When updating my license from a temporary license to a permanent license, will this require a reboot of the device?
