Edge browser identification by HTTP user-agent

Information

Summary:

Details about browser identification in flow data using HTTP user-agent information.

Environment:

Product: Flowmon Collector

Version: Any

Platform: Any

Question/Problem Description:

Is it possible to identify the Edge browser in the flow data?

Steps to Reproduce:
Error Message:
Defect Number:
Enhancement Number:
Cause:
Resolution:

It is not possible to reliably detect Edge browser for two reasons:

  1. The user-agent is visible only in HTTP traffic. This information is encrypted for HTTPS, so it cannot be analyzed by probe.
  2. Edge is based on the Blink browser engine developed as a part of the Chromium project. Due to this fact, it uses the following user-agent string:
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/120.0.0.0 Safari/537.36 Edg/120.0.2210.121
Only the first browser information is exported to the flow data. In this example, it is "Chrome/120.0.0.0". So the information about Edge (Edg/120.0.2210.121) is not in the flow data.
