Metered Licensing offers enterprises and service providers a flexible way to license their application delivery resources. Metered Licensing meets the demands for flexible application capacity and the requirements of environments such as cloud for multiple Application Delivery Controller (ADC) instances. By using this model, an organization subscribes to a defined monthly capacity that can be distributed across unlimited on-demand ADC instances deployed between multiple cloud and on-premises environments. Metered Licensing is a subscription service and enables organizations to pay-as-you-grow with an application delivery infrastructure that is flexible, cost-effective, scalable and always right-sized.
By using the Kemp 360 Central local licensing functionality, you can quickly and easily activate Kemp LoadMaster Virtual Appliances using Metered Licensing. This licensing method enables flexible operational and deployment models to be supported instead of the standard single LoadMaster licensing model.
The aim of this document is to walk you through a successful deployment of Metered Licensing from purchasing a Metered Licensing contract from Kemp to activating the LoadMaster using Kemp 360 Central.
This document is intended for Metered Licensing customers who want to find out how to deploy their Kemp 360 Central and LoadMaster instances.
When we refer to LoadMasters throughout this document, we are referring to a LoadMaster image that has "SPLA" in the file name. Only LoadMasters installed using the SPLA image can obtain a license from Kemp 360 Central.
A Kemp ID is required for licensing. The first stage in doing a successful deployment of Metered Licensing is to register for a Kemp ID (if you do not already have one). To register for a Kemp ID, perform the following steps:
1. Go to the Kemp registration page at https://kemptechnologies.com/kemp-id-registration/
2. Complete the form as required.
Ensure you enter a valid email address. The validation email and license information is sent to this email address.
3. Make note of your password because it is required to activate the account.
4. Click Create a Kemp ID. An email is sent from Kemp to the address specified in the form.
5. Open the email and click Confirm to open the validation screen.
If you do not activate the account within 24 hours of registering, the record is deleted and you must register again.
6. Enter the password that you specified on the registration form.
7. Click Activate Now. You then receive a further confirmation email to inform you that your Kemp ID is now active.
8. Contact Kemp to convert your Kemp ID to a MELA Kemp ID.
This Kemp account can now be used to activate products.
Contact your Kemp representative directly to purchase a Metered Licensing contract.
This is important because you must have a Metered Licensing contract before you can use Metered Licensing and functionality.
However, there is a Metered Licensing trial option that allows five Metered Licenses, but it expires after a predetermined time period. You can download this trial from here.
After you do this, Kemp sends you an Order/Contract ID.
If you do not know the password for your Kemp ID account, you can reset it. To reset the Kemp ID password, follow the steps below:
1. Go to the reset password page: https://kemptechnologies.com/support/reset-password
2. Enter your Kemp ID.
3. Click the Submit button. An email is sent to the address specified.
4. Click the link in the email.
5. Enter the new password in both the Password and Retype Password fields.
6. Click Reset. A message appears informing you that the password is successfully changed.
Since Version 2.3 or greater of Kemp 360 Central, you can complete the change of ownership process from within the Kemp 360 Central UI under Settings and Configuration > License Management > Kemp 360 Central Change of Ownership. For more information, refer to the Feature Description Kemp 360 Central on the Kemp Documentation page.

Having successfully licensed your Kemp 360 Central, the initial configuration is now complete. For further information, including instructions on how to add a network to Kemp 360 Central, refer to the Kemp 360 Central Feature Description on the Kemp Documentation page.
Refer to the relevant LoadMaster installation guide depending on your environment for the appropriate hardware or virtual platform, and return to these instructions once you power on the LoadMaster. You can find all documents on the Kemp Documentation page.
You can deploy a Metered Licensing LoadMaster automatically from within Kemp 360 Central using the Configuration Management feature. For more information, see the Configuration Management section of the Kemp 360 Central Feature Description on the Kemp Documentation page.
Ensure that the LoadMaster image you are deploying has "SPLA" in the image file name. Only LoadMasters installed using an SPLA image can obtain a license from Kemp 360 Central.
Once the LoadMaster is powered on, the IP address it obtains is displayed on the system console.
The Automated Deployment feature does not work in either Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge. When you try to activate a LoadMaster against Kemp 360 Central from the LoadMaster UI using either of these browsers, you get an error.
Follow this procedure to obtain a Metered License for LoadMaster from the Kemp 360 Central instance you previously deployed, following the instructions earlier in this document.
LoadMaster Version 7.2.47 is recommended, but not required. Chrome and Firefox are the recommended browsers to use for the best licensing experience.
1. Once a deployed LoadMaster (see the previous section) is powered on and has obtained an IP address on the network, open the following URL in your browser:
2. Select Kemp 360 Central Licensing from the drop down at the top of the screen.
If Kemp 360 Central Licensing does not appear in the drop-down, then you may have installed the wrong LoadMaster image; refer to Deploy a Metered Licensing LoadMaster for more details or contact Kemp Support.
3. Click Activate Now to display the Activation page.
4. Type the IP address or hostname of the Kemp 360 Central system you installed as instructed previously in the Host text box.
Ensure the address you specify is appropriate for the network connection between Kemp 360 Central and the LoadMaster. If Kemp 360 Central, for example, is deployed in a public cloud and the LoadMaster has no local connection to Kemp 360 Central, ensure you specify Kemp 360 Central's public IP address.
If Kemp 360 Central is deployed on Azure, the internal IP address and host name are found in the Dashboard screen of the Kemp 360 Central instance. The hostname is based on the instance name, which is specified when originally creating the instance. If you are not using Azure, the default hostname is K360Central.
5. If necessary, modify the Port on which Kemp 360 Central is accepting connections.
If using Azure, change the Port setting to 8443.
6. Click Activate. Kemp 360 Central is contacted and the available license types are displayed.
7. Select the License Type and click Continue to apply the license to the LoadMaster.
If you are installing a version of LoadMaster previous to Version 7.2.47, a Sign In screen may be displayed. If you see this screen:
a. Click Cancel.
b. Refresh the browser screen.
8. Once the license is applied, the screen above appears.
9. Type a password for the 'bal' administrative login into the fields provided and click Set Password.
10. A screen may appear asking you to select a certificate for the connection; click Cancel. If the previous screen re-appears, refresh your browser.
11. The LoadMaster displays a message confirming the password was set.
12. Click Continue (or, on older versions of LoadMaster, click OK).
Because the LoadMaster WUI is using a default certificate, a security warning may be displayed. How to get through the warnings depends on your browser. On Chrome, click Advanced and then Proceed to IP_address, where IP_address is the IP address of the LoadMaster. The login page should now be displayed.
The LoadMaster is now licensed. You can log into the system using the bal user name and the password you created in Step 9.
When installing a version of LoadMaster previous to Version 7.2.47, the login screen above displays a Notice listing additional "Steps required to complete Kemp 360 Central Activation". If the Kemp 360 Central version you are using is Version 2.3 or greater, you can ignore these instructions because the Version 2.3 licensing process completes the activation process with no further user interaction. You can disable this Notice on the login page by logging in to the WUI, navigating to System Configuration > Miscellaneous Options > Kemp 360 Central Activation Settings, and enabling the Hide Activation Settings Message check box.
A LoadMaster licensed via Kemp 360 Central periodically contacts Kemp 360 Central to verify the LoadMaster's license activation status. If the activation check does not occur or fails because the license is deactivated, a message is displayed in the LoadMaster WUI and the Virtual LoadMaster will stop working after a predetermined length of time based on your agreement with Kemp.
To confirm that the newly licensed LoadMaster is added to Kemp 360 Central:
1. Log into the Kemp 360 Central UI by typing the following URL into your browser, where Kemp360Central_IP_address is the same IP address you specified in Step 4 of the previous procedure:
2. Click the Network and Device Administration icon near the top left of the UI and expand the relevant subnetwork to see your new device, which should be displayed with a blue icon, as in this example:
When installing the current LTS version of LoadMaster, the icon for the LoadMaster appears grey with a yellow triangle. This means that the LoadMaster is not fully added into Management.
Reboot the LoadMaster to add it correctly into Management by going to the LoadMaster IP Address, log in, then navigate to System Configuration > System Administration > System Reboot, and click Reboot. Following this reboot, the LoadMaster will be fully added into Kemp 360 Central Management and appears with a blue icon in the network tree on the Kemp 360 Central UI. It can take up to 1 minute for Kemp 360 Central to poll the LoadMaster to get its current status.
3. Click the device icon on the left to confirm that the system configuration and statistics are being collected.
4. Click Settings and Configuration > LoadMaster Licensing to display a table of active licenses, which should contain the IP address of the LoadMaster you just licensed.
If you try to license your LoadMaster and there are issues, a number of checks are performed automatically and the results and associated error message are displayed.
These checks perform the following tasks:
- Ping Default Gateway
- Ping DNS Servers
- Ping Activation Server
You can also manually check the Kemp 360 Central debug log. This might provide some information if there are any failures when updating the license. If there are no entries relating to Activation Server, it means the connection to the Activation Server has failed.
Below is a list of errors that Kemp 360 Central may return during local licensing or when the LoadMaster is contacting Kemp 360 Central:

|Invalid local license initialization.||The connection between the LoadMaster and Kemp 360 Central failed during local licensing.||This should not occur with a valid LoadMaster. Contact Kemp Customer Support.|
|Trial has Expired.||Local licensing (or contacting the licensing server) is performed on a Kemp 360 Central machine with an expired MELA trial.||License the Kemp 360 Central machine with a permanent MELA license or use another Kemp 360 Central machine for local licensing.|
|Can't verify check.||Kemp 360 Central cannot identify if the request is from a valid LoadMaster.||This should not occur with a valid LoadMaster. Contact Kemp Customer Support.|
|This LoadMaster cannot be licensed against this Kemp 360 Central at this time.||The LoadMaster is in a BLOCKED status in Kemp 360 Central.||The LoadMaster may have been activated earlier with Kemp 360 Central and the credentials were not entered during the "Block unconfirmed local license activation after" period. Unblock the LoadMaster from the Metered Licensing Management page.|
|LM not added in the system because Kemp Analytics or update license is called from LM UP with MAC <mac-address>.||This error is when the LoadMaster is booted inside Kemp 360 Central.||This should not occur with a deployed LoadMaster or when a LoadMaster that is in an up status is deployed on a hypervisor. Contact Kemp Customer Support if this error occurs with a valid LoadMaster.|
|Not issuing license to LM because Kemp 360 Central has trial license and LM has active license from another Central/ALSI||The LoadMaster has an active license from another Kemp 360 Central or from the Kemp Licensing Server and is trying to license against a Kemp 360 Central machine that has a MELA trial license.||Either upgrade the Kemp 360 Central license to a permanent license or license against a different Kemp 360 Central machine or against the Kemp 360 Central machine that was originally used for licensing.|
|Device with same IP Address already exist.||A LoadMaster with the same IP address and port exists in the system and has an active local license.||First, delete the LoadMaster with the same IP address and port from the network tree and try to license it again or change the IP address of the LoadMaster being licensed.|
|Unable to generate license UUID||This is because of an internal failure and Kemp 360 Central is not able to generate a LoadMaster license with the UUID.||This is an internal error. Contact Kemp Customer Support.|
|Kemp 360 is unlicensed.||The local licensing request is performed before Kemp 360 Central is licensed or the Kemp 360 Central license has been terminated by the Kemp Licensing Server.||License the Kemp 360 Central machine before trying to perform local LoadMaster licensing.|
|Local license instance limit reached.||The total number of LoadMaster licenses has reached the limit and no more new LoadMasters can be licensed.||Increase the license limit by purchasing new licenses or delete a LoadMaster that is not needed to release a license.|
|Invalid License Type ID provided.||The License Type ID provided at the time of licensing does not exist or the license ID provided does not belong to the LoadMaster system type.||This should never happen through the User Interface (UI) but it is possible through the RESTful Application Program Interface (API) if the wrong lic_type_id is provided during license activation.|
|No Local license found.||No valid license was found for the LoadMaster or all of the licenses for a particular LoadMaster type are in use.||Use the appropriate LoadMaster image for which Kemp 360 Central has a valid license. This is generally a Service Provider License Agreement (SPLA) image.|
|No License configured for LM SKU name. (Where name is the licensing related identifier of the LoadMaster that the user attempted to license.)||An attempt was made to license a LoadMaster against Kemp 360 Central and no licenses match the LoadMaster SKU identifier.||Address the problem by contacting Kemp Support to determine if you need a new Kemp 360 Central License (to provide licenses that match the license identifier (SKU) of the LoadMaster you are trying to license), or obtain a LoadMaster installation image whose license identifier (SKU) matches the SKU of the licenses already available from your current Kemp 360 Central instance.|
On version 7.2.48, non-SPLA LoadMasters have the Kemp 360 Central Licensing option. However, if this is selected for a non-SPLA LoadMaster, licensing fails with the error Activation failed: No local License found. If you have a non-SPLA LoadMaster, use the Online Licensing or Offline Licensing options instead.
