Failing health checks - EOF or Incorrect data received

Summary:

Real Server is failing health checks. "EOF or Incorrect data received" is present in the System Message File logs of the LoadMaster.

Question/Problem Description:

Why are health checks failing for real servers?

Steps to Reproduce:

Cause:
  • To view the logs for an entry explaining why the Real Server failed it's health check, go to System Configuration > Logging Options > System Log Files > System Message File
  • This message indicates that the server is failing the health check due to sending a response the load balancer cannot interpret.
  • Change the health check parameters in the VS to have the health check request a specific page, and/or use a specific host header to get the proper response from the server.
  • Verify the "HTTP Method" being used for health checks (GET, POST, HEAD) is accepted by the Server.  This can also cause this error.
Resolution: Needed to switch the method from HEAD to GET.
Workaround: Health checks can be lowered to either TCP Connection Only or ICMP Ping.
