It is advised that customers spin up and configure a trial LoadMaster and then transfer their permanent license. Once Kill License option is used, LoadMaster WUI will become unresponsive, and all services will be interrupted.
There are a few prerequisites and criteria that need to be met in order to be able to transfer a permanent license as listed below:
- The LoadMaster needs to be running version 7.2.50 and above.
- A connectivity from the LoadMaster to the Internet is required. This feature is only available with Online Licensing option.
- Only permanent licenses that are under active Support/Support subscription can be transferred.
- The transferred license can be applied to an existing Trial or Free LoadMaster or a newly deployed LoadMaster. The following license types cannot be transferred:
- Service Provider License Agreement (SPLA)
- Metered Enterprise Licensing Agreement (MELA)
- Pooled
- Pay As You Go (PAYG)
- Only the LoadMaster License Owner can perform license transfer using. Below is an article that explains how to change the LoadMaster's ownership prior this process if needed:

In order to transfer a permanent license from one LoadMaster device to another, the existing LoadMaster's license needs to be killed, and use the available license to license an existing Trial or Free LoadMaster or newly deployed LoadMaster using your Kemp ID or Order ID. Once killed, licenses can be transferred to an existing Trial or Free LoadMaster or a newly deployed LoadMaster.
Scenario 1 (Transfer to an existing Trial or Free LoadMaster):
- In the main menu of the LoadMaster WUI, go to System Configuration > System Administration > License Management.
- Select Online Licensing from the drop-down list.
- Enter Kemp ID and Password.
- Click Kill License to remove the license from this LoadMaster.
- Once Kill License option is clicked, the LoadMaster WUI will be inaccessible, and LoadMaster will enter into unlicensed state. Kemp ID will receive an email notifying the license was killed.
Follow these steps to apply the available license on another LoadMaster device:
- Go to an already deployed Trial or Free LoadMaster WUI to which you intend to transfer the permanent license to.
- In the main menu of the LoadMaster WUI, go to System Configuration > System Administration > License Management. Select Online Licensing from the drop-down list.
- Enter Kemp ID and Password. You can also use the Order ID number if you are not the original license owner.
- Click Update License.
- Select the permanent license available under Subscription.
- You may see more than one permanent license in case you have multiple licenses available.
- Click Continue.
- On successful license transfer, all features of the old license will be available on the LoadMaster.
Scenario 2 (Transfer to a newly deployed LoadMaster):
- In the main menu of the LoadMaster WUI, go to System Configuration > System Administration > License Management.
- Select Online Licensing from the drop-down list.
- Enter Kemp ID and Password.
- Click Kill License to remove the license from this LoadMaster.
- Once Kill License option is clicked, the LoadMaster WUI will be inaccessible, and LoadMaster will enter into unlicensed state. Kemp ID will receive an email notifying the license was killed.
Once the license is killed, a new LoadMaster needs to be deployed to apply the permanent license. From the WUI, after accepting the EULA, the steps would be as follows:
- Enter Kemp ID and Password. The Order ID can be used if number if you are not the original license owner.
- Click License Now.
- Select the permanent license available.
- More than once permanent licenses will show as selectable in case multiple licenses are available.
- Click Continue.
- On successful license transfer, all features of the old license will be available on the LoadMaster.
